BUSINESS NEWS

  • West Des Moines City Council unanimously approved plans for the city’s first Kwik Star convenience store along Westown Parkway across from Valley West Mall during its meeting this week, and the council stated no city funds are provided amid concerns over increased competition + traffic from a nearby business.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Central Iowa Water Works ended its nitrate removal operation nearly two months after starting on Jan. 6 in Des Moines — the system was used to cut high nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, and water continues to meet EPA standards for 600,000 residents.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced that communities can now apply online for opioid crisis grants from a $365 million settlement fund, with up to $20 million expected by the end of June for local prevention and treatment efforts.  KCCI
  • The Pentagon confirmed that four Army Reserve soldiers were killed on Sunday when a drone struck a command center in Kuwait, including Sergeant Declan J. Coady from West Des Moines — a 2023 West Des Moines Valley graduate and current Drake University student. Governor Reynolds offered condolences as the local community mourned his loss.  KCCI
  • The Iowa House unanimously approved a bill to expand intensive mental health services outside hospitals & remove the need for prior authorization on admissions, officials said. The measure also ends a rule limiting coverage to 10 days and creates a bed tracking system for children, and now moves to the Iowa Senate.  Radio Iowa

  • Iowa native Kevin McKee — a veteran sled hockey player from Davenport — will compete this week at the Paralympic Winter Games in Milan, aiming for his fourth gold medal. He recently recovered from emergency surgery after a practice injury and will show his speed and skill on the ice.  Radio Iowa
