COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Blank Park Zoo said that one of its twin cotton-top tamarin babies, a 3-week-old born (Feb. 18), was found separated from its group on Friday and in poor health, so staff euthanized the baby; the zoo said high death rates in these animals have led it to work to boost numbers (to help protect this critically endangered species).  KCCI
  • Meals Madness at Meals from the Heartland is underway from March 17 to 22 where 1,000 volunteer spots are available to package nutritious meals for neighbors in need. Donors who give $75 will feed a child for a year and have a chance to win a prize.  Greater Des Moines Partnership

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Labor Department revised data showed Iowa’s labor force grew by 31,000 in January, raising the participation rate to 67%—a six-tenths point gain from late 2024—while the unemployment rate held at 3.3%. Iowa Workforce Development director Beth Townsend said more women aged 45 to 54 and 20 to 24 returning to work helped boost the numbers.  Radio Iowa

  • The Iowa DOT released a guide for farmers that consolidates transportation regulations—Melisa Gillett said the printed and online guide was refined with feedback from farmers at the Iowa State Fair. Copies are available at driver license locations and through the State Patrol.  Radio Iowa
