CRIME NEWS

  • Bond has been set at $100 million for Honduran man Eswin Mejia—who was extradited last week—after he fled following his arrest for fatally rear-ending the car of Council Bluffs resident Sarah Root in a 2016 traffic accident in Omaha; his next court appearance is set for April 29.  Radio Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Stephen Locher temporarily blocked the part of Iowa’s 2023 law that bans school library books showing sex acts, halting its enforcement after the law had been active this school year. A lawsuit by the Iowa State Education Association, major publishers, and authors — including John Green and Jodi Picoult — argues the law is overly broad and limits local control of school materials.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill in the Iowa Legislature, House File 711, proposes an apprenticeship program that lets unlicensed workers learn hairstyling under a licensed cosmetologist, and cosmetologists remain divided on whether the change will lower standards or broaden access. Some owners worry apprentices may stay locked to one salon while others praise the added two hours of education on state laws (and industry rules) as a path to better training, with the bill now under review.  WHO13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Hawkeye and current Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark sits down with former late-night talk show host David Letterman—her interview for his Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction—will premiere on April 8.  KCCI
