Dutch scientist Huub Lelieveld (a global food safety expert) was named the 57th World Food Prize Laureate at a ceremony in New York City this morning; he led efforts that reduced foodborne illness and trading hurdles and will visit Iowa later this year for the annual symposium.

The West Des Moines school board is accepting applications for a vacant seat after Fannette Elliott joined City Council.

Applications close April 13 and the board will interview candidates on April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Learning Resource Center (3550 Mills Civic Parkway).
