  • Michelle Book transformed the Food Bank of Iowa by boosting food distribution more than 200% and increasing its truck fleet from three to 20, which helped serve more people. Book—former hog farmer and single mom turned CEO—said she hopes her legacy is remembered for caring for her neighbors.  WHO13

CRIME NEWS

  • Des Moines police identified 62-year-old David Molina Ramirez as the pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run over the weekend near the 1100 block of E. 9th Street—he was struck in an alley while walking and the driver fled the scene, prompting officials to ask for public tips.  KCCI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The deadline to vote for your favorite student design for Iowa’s new education license plate is in two weeks as the Department of Education launched the contest to update the design used since 1997. Voters will rank designs from 16 finalists in four grade groups, with the winning design announced toward the end of the school year and the new plates available this summer.  Radio Iowa

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ten throwers from Ironside Axe Club in West Des Moines have qualified to compete at the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships in Appleton, Wisconsin, running from April 3rd to April 6th with over $60,000 in prize money. They are leaving today and say this is their first time at Worlds—each has practiced hard to be ready for the challenge.  WHO13
