CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ LadyLike is a two-day event for Black women that will be at the Hilton Downtown Des Moines on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3—created by four local women to build connections and offer growth opportunities. Organizers say the summit will include speakers, group sessions and vendor booths to help women improve their skills and network. KCCI
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The EPA granted an emergency waiver on E15 fuel sales nationwide starting May 1 and ending May 20 & Iowa officials say the move will offer more fuel choices with lower prices, following $38 million in savings for Iowa drivers in 2024. State leaders hope a permanent rule will follow to support farmers and fuel producers. KCCI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa legislature approved a bill that requires schools to train every staff member to spot and respond to seizures and have one person ready to give anti-seizure medicine. The law lets parents create seizure action plans with school staff and gives liability protection to educators—supporters cited personal experiences to push for the change. Radio Iowa
- ➤ Iowans for Tax Relief has launched a website that shows data on every Iowa public school — the site lists graduation rates, ACT scores, budgets, reading levels, enrollment trends, and property tax levies to help parents learn more and ask better questions at school board meetings. Radio Iowa
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa DOT will close the northbound entrance ramp at Hickman and the northbound exit ramp at Douglas on May 5 until August to add a third lane between University and Douglas—drivers on the west side will face detours despite minimal delays. Earlier this month, the agency also closed the southbound entrance ramp at Hickman and the exit ramp at University, and those closures will continue until August. KCCI
- ➤ On Monday afternoon, the Iowa Senate passed a bill by a vote of 36 to 14 that adds regulations for pharmacy benefit managers to reimburse pharmacies based on the National Average Drug Cost and a dispensing fee. Some senators said the amendment may help stop further closures while others warned it might shift costs to patients—the bill now returns to the Iowa House for further review. WHO13
