Good morning, West Des Moines.
The EPA announced Monday that summer sales of E-15 gasoline will run uninterrupted, a move applauded by Iowa lawmakers and the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association—Geoff Cooper of the National Renewable Fuels Association said the decision may boost ethanol demand, save families money, and help farmers while efforts continue to make the change permanent.
Cities across central Iowa face costly sewer clogs as crews in Fort Dodge and Des Moines remove non-flushable items (like cleaning products, fire extinguishers, and bowling balls) that cause backups in sewer mains and expensive repairs in homes.
City officials say these problems cost up to $1 billion nationally each year and urge residents to flush only human waste and toilet paper.
On Tuesday, National Fentanyl Awareness Day was observed by the DEA, law enforcement, public health departments and community groups to warn locals about fentanyl—a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin.
Melissa Burke of the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition, who lost her sister, stressed that free fentanyl test strips and Narcan are available to help prevent overdose deaths.
Hoover High School Boys Soccer forfeited its first eight games this season after the Iowa High School Athletic Association ruled that a 20-year-old player was ineligible—this decision dropped the team from the rankings.
Director Charles Zanders said the error came from a documentation mix-up and that the team will still be fine for the playoffs.
