COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Thursday night, Valley Junction started its farmers market season when over 90 vendors filled 5th Street with local food, crafts, and live music at Railroad Park—features included homemade ice cream from V&B Farms and a kids area with baby goats from West Homestead’s Healing Herd. The market will run every Thursday from May to September from 4-8 p.m.  WHO13

CRIME NEWS

  • West Des Moines man Jordan Allen pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for a fatal Hy-Vee parking lot crash in October when he hit Sheila Albert — he is now appealing his two-year prison sentence and remains out on a $5,000 bond.  KCCI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A West Des Moines man, Jeff Spiess (59), won $100,000 on an Iowa Lottery scratch-off ticket bought at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh (425 S. Jordan Creek Parkway) and claimed his prize on Thursday. He said he may use the funds to pay bills, save for retirement and buy a new car.  WHO13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trader Joe's announced on April 28 that a batch of its Sesame Miso Salad with Salmon sold in Iowa was recalled—customers with salads showing UPC SKU 77316 and use-by dates April 28 or April 29 should discard or return them for a refund.  Des Moines Register
  • MercyOne Des Moines and Bras for the Cause are partnering to offer free mammograms and breakfast to low-income and underinsured women in Central Iowa—an event slated for May 3 at MercyOne Health Plaza in Des Moines, MercyOne Ankeny Imaging and MercyOne Clive Imaging.  WHO13

SPORTS NEWS

  • A survey by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union shows that girls’ basketball participation continues to drop as 70% of coaches blame the sport's difficulty and conflicts with club volleyball—despite hopes raised by the Caitlin Clark effect. A panel of coaches and athletic associations will meet in June to discuss plans to support the program.  WHO13
