- ➤ Meals from the Heartland will host its 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on June 19 at Beaver Creek Golf Club as golfers register at 9:00 a.m. and begin play at 10:00 a.m. The event offers lunch, appetizers & awards and will help fight hunger by supporting Meals from the Heartland’s mission. - ➤ Jasper Winery will host its Summer Concert Series every Thursday from May 8 through July 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Visitors may bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy different bands and onsite food trucks—weather permitting. Greater Des Moines Partnership
- ➤ Jasper Winery will host the first annual Free Range Music and BBQ Festival on Saturday, June 14 — the event will feature top BBQ restaurants, local craft beer and cider, and live Americana music in a family-friendly setting. Tickets range from $30 to $50 and the festival is set to bring central Iowa's best flavors and tunes together. Greater Des Moines Partnership
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ West Des Moines Public Safety departments conducted a Public Safety All Hazards Drill at Holiday Park and Florer Park Friday from 7:00 a.m. to noon—police, fire, and EMS personnel participated while the public was asked to avoid the parks. WHO13
- ➤ Governor Reynolds said she received positive signals from USDA officials as they reviewed Iowa’s waiver request to allow families with children who get free or reduced price school lunches to buy groceries in the summer—she is also awaiting decisions on additional waiver requests aimed at streamlining education funding, food benefits, and Medicaid work requirements. - ➤ A bill cleared by the Iowa House subcommittee will create a prison infrastructure fund and launch a study of nine state-run prisons because the facilities hold 24% more inmates than they were built for—Representative Brian Lohse said the measure is expected to spark a discussion on needed improvements.
