Exile Brewing Company in downtown Des Moines won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup on May 1 for its G.G. brew in the Munich-Style Dunkel category — the brew had previously earned a silver medal in 2024 and multiple national awards.

A 16-year-old West Des Moines student was arrested on May 20 after allegedly assaulting another student with scissors at Walnut Creek Campus near 11:45 a.m. — police confirmed that trained school staff intervened during a verbal altercation and the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Farmers in Iowa advanced corn planting to 91 percent—up from 76 percent last week, putting planting 12 days ahead of last year and four days ahead of the five-year average.

Soybean planting reached 84 percent, eight days ahead of last year as the north-central and northwest regions led the effort.

West Des Moines residents will attend the State of the City event on July 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Mayor Russ Trimble, City Manager Tom Hadden and Community and Economic Development Director Ryan Moffatt will share updates on city plans.)

State troopers have started a Special Traffic Enforcement Program until June 1 to check for distracted, impaired driving, unbelted passengers and cell phone use while driving (STEP).

The program will enforce a hands free cell phone law starting July 1 and warns that holding a cell phone while driving might incur a 100 dollar fine beginning January 1.
