BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Exile Brewing Company in downtown Des Moines won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup on May 1 for its G.G. brew in the Munich-Style Dunkel category — the brew had previously earned a silver medal in 2024 and multiple national awards. WHO13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 16-year-old West Des Moines student was arrested on May 20 after allegedly assaulting another student with scissors at Walnut Creek Campus near 11:45 a.m. — police confirmed that trained school staff intervened during a verbal altercation and the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Farmers in Iowa advanced corn planting to 91 percent—up from 76 percent last week, putting planting 12 days ahead of last year and four days ahead of the five-year average. Soybean planting reached 84 percent, eight days ahead of last year as the north-central and northwest regions led the effort. Radio Iowa
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ West Des Moines residents will attend the State of the City event on July 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Mayor Russ Trimble, City Manager Tom Hadden and Community and Economic Development Director Ryan Moffatt will share updates on city plans.) Greater Des Moines Partnership
- ➤ State troopers have started a Special Traffic Enforcement Program until June 1 to check for distracted, impaired driving, unbelted passengers and cell phone use while driving (STEP). The program will enforce a hands free cell phone law starting July 1 and warns that holding a cell phone while driving might incur a 100 dollar fine beginning January 1. Radio Iowa
