GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ waiver to limit eligible foods purchased under SNAP was approved by USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, restricting taxable items like candy, soda and certain granola bars. The waiver will take effect January 1 — a measure meant to promote healthy eating while critics argue it falls short in addressing food insecurity.  WHO13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last year, PGA Tour Champions held the Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in Des Moines where 78 players competed for a $2 million purse with $300,000 going to the winner—raising over $62 million for Iowa children’s charities. The three-day tournament featured several pro-am events and showcased the recently renovated course to enthusiastic spectators.  KCCI
  • Noah Pfantz, a 14-year-old golfer with two serious heart conditions, was honored as the youth champion at the 2024 Principal Charity Classic that raised a record $8.6 million for Iowa children's charities — including Blank Children's Hospital, MercyOne Children's Hospital, Variety — the Children's Charity of Iowa and United Way of Central Iowa. His achievement reflects his daily dedication to practice and the tournament’s long-standing support for Iowa youth.  KCCI
