CRIME NEWS

  • The West Des Moines Police Department said 13-year-old Dhianna Hughes, reported missing on May 24 near 11th Street and Office Park Road, was located in Jefferson County, Tennessee and is being reunited with her family—investigators believe she was not alone when she left.  WHO13
  • On Sunday just after noon, Des Moines police received a 911 call reporting a man standing near the guardrail on the top floor of a downtown parking ramp that has 11 levels. Officers spent nearly two hours talking with him and helped him return to safety—saving his life.  Radio Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Iowa Goldstar Military Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston marks 40 years of preserving Iowa veterans' history this year. Curator Mike Vogt said the museum began in 1985 from a retired veteran's idea and now plans to expand its gallery space to display more donated artifacts.  Radio Iowa

ECONOMY NEWS

  • HVAC companies in West Des Moines are facing a shortage of the new eco-friendly refrigerant required by the government since January 1, which is driving up air conditioning repair and installation costs as temperatures rise. Tariffs on the refrigerant have raised cylinder prices by hundreds of dollars, and if the shortage continues, costs for new systems will increase further.  WHO13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Communities across Iowa are hosting send-off ceremonies for 1,800 Iowa National Guard soldiers who will soon deploy to the Middle East — 24 events are planned over the next three days with 13 ceremonies occurring today in Boone, Johnston, Iowa Falls, Carroll, West Des Moines, and Red Oak.  KCCI
  • The Des Moines Register countersued Gov. Kim Reynolds—alleging her office broke open records law by refusing to release four emails in an 800-page records request. Reynolds sued the paper last month—claiming she provided most documents while keeping the four emails confidential.  KCCI
