ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Des Moines police are investigating a fatal crash after West Des Moines resident Margarita Santiago-Popovski, 38, crashed her vehicle on Wednesday night near School Street and was picked up and driven to a hospital early Thursday, where she died later, with officers recovering the abandoned car at 11:30 a.m.—this marks the sixth deadly crash in Des Moines this year.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • Clive police evacuated MercyOne Family Medicine on Thursday after a bomb threat forced patients and staff to leave, and detectives later arrested 59-year-old Kevin Sanders from West Des Moines—he admitted making the call in frustration over a long wait on hold.  Radio Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Music Under the Stars festival used to be held at Iowa Capitol but will now rotate between Hoyt Sherman Place and Water Works Park—its new venues for this weekend. Organized by the Des Moines Metro Concert Band and the Des Moines Metro Big Band, the free concert will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday—featuring Pirate Songs and Love Songs.  KCCI
  • The Iowa Goldstar Military Museum is holding its fourth Vietnam war living history event this weekend at Camp Dodge in Johnston. Reenactors in period uniforms and speakers will share veterans' experiences today from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—the event is free.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two local bird watchers rescued an osprey from Army Post Road in late April to prevent it from being hit by traffic, and Iowa Bird Rehabilitation along with Saving Our Avian Resources cared for it for over a month. The 19-year-old bird—an unusually old age for its species—has played a key role in repopulating the raptor in West Des Moines.  Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Professor Patrick O’Shaughnessy — from the University of Iowa — said smoky air from Canadian wildfires, which drove the Des Moines Air Quality Index to 104 on Wednesday, will lead to more health advisories in the coming weeks as people with asthma, COPD, or heart problems are urged to keep windows closed and use proper air filters.  Radio Iowa
  • The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services warned that whooping cough cases are on the rise after 19 confirmed pertussis cases were reported in Iowa’s largest county over the past three months. Polk County Health Department advised residents to be up to date on their pertussis vaccination—health officials say outbreaks tend to occur every three to five years.  Radio Iowa
  • Fifteen years ago, Hubbell Realty began installing passive radon mitigation systems in new homes in Iowa to lower the risks from radon—found in seven out of ten houses—which can cost $1,700 to $2,000 if added later. A bill to require these systems passed the House but stalled in the Senate, and lawmakers urged residents to contact their state senators.  KCCI
