- ➤ Holiday Aquatic Center in West Des Moines is ready for more visitors this weekend as temperatures rise (pools expect extra traffic due to the heat). West Des Moines Parks and Recreation will check on lifeguards and swimmers and advise everyone to drink water and reapply sunscreen (officials recall a record busy day during the last heat wave). - ➤ Halberstadt's Men's Clothiers closed its Valley West Mall location on June 16th and opened its new store at Jordan Creek Town Center on the weekend of June 14th—a move that continues a trend of retailers leaving Valley West since its opening in 2004. Des Moines Register
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Des Moines Police Department asked for help finding 43-year-old Omar Andrew Hymes who is wanted for a violent domestic assault that occurred on March 9 in a vehicle near SE 14th Street and Hartford Avenue—he is described as 5-foot-7 and approximately 200 pounds with active warrants including charges for domestic assault with a weapon, among others. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crow Tow is days away from becoming Polk County's new provider for impound services after county officials approved a three-year contract on Tuesday covering 911 call responses for crashes or stalled vehicles. The agreement takes effect next month and passed in a 3-2 vote despite Supervisor Tom Hockensmith's concerns over the company's practice of actively seeking vehicles to tow. KCCI
- ➤ The Iowa DNR advises Iowans to wear life jackets when using rivers and to avoid paddling after heavy rain because debris can form dangerous strainers that flip boats & trap paddlers. WHO13

- ➤ Susan Dahlman from Pleasant Hill made activity kits called A Ray of Sunshine Project in memory of her late husband Ray, who fought Alzheimer’s. The kits include ten double-sided pages, a dry erase marker, and an eraser—proceeds from sales will help fund Alzheimer’s causes. WHO13
