- ➤ WHO 13 Cares and the station partnered with Vibrant Insurance and United Way of Central Iowa to collect nearly 1,000 donated hygiene items for local students at Kurtz Opportunity Center on Friday. - ➤ A 22-year-old man from Cheyenne rushed the stage at the Iowa Events Center during the final round of the National Speech and Debate Tournament on Thursday—sparking panic among hundreds and leading to his arrest for disorderly conduct after officers found marijuana and psychoactive mushrooms in his backpack. - ➤ After a man made a bomb threat on Thursday at the EMC Expo Center that sent attendees into a chaotic evacuation, police arrested 22-year-old Jayden Michael Roccaforte from Cheyenne and organizers added extra security measures—metal detectors, bag searches, and mandatory badges—for the rest of the tournament. - ➤ The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Friday that nine state beaches have high E. coli levels and swimming is not advised until water quality improves—covering sites in Delaware, Franklin, Sac, Wayne, Dickinson, Monona, Hardin, Decatur and Calhoun counties. - ➤ A federal judge in Iowa blocked a Biden-era rule that would have required nursing homes to keep a registered nurse on site 24 hours and provide over 3.5 hours of daily care by certified nursing assistants; Brent Willett, president & CEO of the Iowa Health Care Association, said the decision came amid concerns that nurse shortages would force many facilities to close. - ➤ Pleasant Hill resident Susan Dahlman uses her art skills to design activity kits called A Ray of Sunshine Project for people with memory challenges in honor of her late husband Ray Dahlman who fought Alzheimer’s. The kits come with ten reusable double sided pages, dry erase markers and an eraser — proceeds support Alzheimer’s programs. FOX 17
- ➤ Central Iowa water officials confirmed that water is safe to drink as treated levels from the Fleur Drive (8.05 mg/L) and McMullen (8.29 mg/L) plants meet EPA standards despite higher nitrate readings of 14.4 mg/L and 14.2 mg/L in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, and they dismissed Facebook rumors of unsafe water.
