- ➤ The Furry Friends shelter in West Des Moines filled its animal care slots this week by placing every pet in a foster home to protect them from nearby fireworks that shake the building—staff say the shelter will remain empty for the holiday weekend. WHO13
- ➤ Meals from the Heartland passed the one million mark for meals given to Iowa food banks and pantries on June 1 (beating last year's record of 952,000 meals). Marketing Manager Daniel Rieck said higher food prices drove the need for more meals (and the program needs more volunteers this summer before the busy October hunger fight). Radio Iowa

- ➤ A West Des Moines resident was arrested in Waukee on Friday when officers stopped her vehicle at 11:30 a.m. after receiving reports of reckless driving on a recreational trail near Waukee High School—she was charged with reckless driving and taken to Dallas County Jail. WHO13
