CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police’s Bomb Squad responded on Thursday when a golfer found a live IED near hole 8 at Waveland Golf Course — officers detonated the device on site and evacuated the area before the course reopened later that day. The police and ATF are now investigating evidence that suggests the device may have been homemade. WHO13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Paul McCartney will perform at Casey's Center on October 14 as part of his Got Back tour, marking his third show in Des Moines since 2005. Presale and VIP tickets will go on sale Tuesday, July 15 with general tickets available on Friday, July 18 (10 a.m.). WHO13
- ➤ State, county and city leaders attended a groundbreaking at Butler Mansion for the Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa, a $20-million project that will host a museum, event center and bocce-ball courts. The project will use funds from state and Polk County grants and is expected to open in fall 2026. WHO13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club released a report that shows Iowa lost more than 90% of its wetlands and prairies and nearly three-quarters of its forests over the last 200 years—Drake University professor Thomas Rosburg warned that this loss fragments habitats and urged expanding corridors along streams, rivers and roads to connect wild areas. The report calls for urgent action to restore native ecosystems. Radio Iowa

- ➤ Krisha Keeran — founder of Club Kids for a Cause and a University of Iowa alum — was seriously injured in a March 2024 bicycle accident and now leads the nonprofit’s eighth fundraiser.
