COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowans for Adoption hosted its 11th Annual Move for Adoption event in West Des Moines on Sunday afternoon to raise awareness for more than 500 youth in foster care awaiting adoption. Funds raised from the event went toward educational materials on Iowa’s Safe Haven Act and efforts to promote foster care adoption — a step that may help connect children with families.  FOX 17
  • Overnight storms swept through the Iowa State Fairgrounds, causing tree limbs to break and heavy rain to leave campers with leaking ceilings and bowed walls. Crews cleared debris as campers and vendors worked to recover + prepare for the upcoming fair.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that Pleasant Hill resident Terry Barrett, 47, died at an apartment complex at 2221 Stanton Avenue in Southwestern Hills after being shot late Monday night—authorities arrested 19-year-old Amarianna Findley-Murry and charged her with persons ineligible to carry dangerous weapons after evidence showed she fired a .40 handgun during a dispute.  WHO13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Acclaimed French artist Oyoram unveiled a giant digital clock—TimePiece—on the side of the Fitch Building in downtown Des Moines, which shows 12 clock faces with mini-shows every 15 minutes. The installation was made possible by in-kind donations and blends art with technology to spark community conversation.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Des Moines issued a flood warning on July 30 for areas along the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers. The Des Moines River at SE 6th Street is expected to crest today at 25.8 feet — above flood stage — while the Raccoon River at Fleur Drive will reach 14.8 feet early Friday morning.  KCCI

  • The Chicago Cubs' Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg died Monday at age 65 after battling prostate cancer and was honored with a moment of silence before Tuesday's game at Principal Park. Iowa Cubs officials and local fans recalled his legendary career and friendly presence—his impact on the team and community endures.  WHO13
