- ➤ Blue Star Mothers are gathering cards and donations at the Iowa State Fair to send care packages to soldiers as another 250 service members prepare to leave for a mission in the Middle East today at 10 a.m. at Valley Stadium—having raised $7,000 of their $10,000 goal, the group still needs 2,000 cards to complete the packages. - ➤ The Naiditch family lost their 5-year-old son Paxton over a year ago and has launched a nonprofit called Pages from Paxton to raise funds for donating books to children’s hospitals. Their first event, Pars Fore Paxton at A.H. Blank Golf Course (in Des Moines), raised nearly $30,000 to support kids in local and nearby areas and will expand to Omaha, St. Louis and Twin Cities. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Amy Kahler of Des Moines Water Works said the EPA decision to remove parts of the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers from the impaired waters list will hurt water quality — the move will lower funding and lessen monitoring. DMWW has used its nitrate removal facility 112 days this year — it will need to triple capacity if nitrate levels continue to rise. WHO13
