CRIME NEWS

  • Des Moines police pursued a stolen SUV early this morning at 3 a.m., and the teen driver later lost control and hit a utility pole—causing 1,400 customers to lose power until MidAmerican Energy restored service within four hours.  Radio Iowa
  • Des Moines police said a teen was taken into custody after crashing a stolen car when he ran a red light at 3 a.m. Tuesday and tried to evade officers, striking a power pole at Beaver and Forest avenues—cutting power for about 1,400 people—and the car was reported stolen from a home in Beaverdale.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Iowa State Fair released its 2026 theme, Fair Spirit, on Monday—reflecting its tie to the 1976 bicentennial fair. The fair will join America250 and run from August 13-23 next year.  WHO13

  • Iowa schools will test students’ math skills three times a year under the new Math Counts Act and use computerized testing to plan instruction for those falling behind—officials say this approach mirrors the successful literacy tests already in use.  Radio Iowa
