CULTURE NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Des Moines Area Community College’s board voted unanimously Monday to extend its presidential search after two finalists withdrew for personal reasons, prompting plans to interview new candidates in late February and early March with the aim of a July 1 start. The board will also begin a targeted search for an interim president who will serve from January 1 to June 30 next year.  KCCI
  • A concerned parent with children in special education says her kids are overlooked in DMPS's Reimagining Education bond plan as early voting begins and the referendum nears; she argues that cost savings should clearly support special education needs. DMPS has formed an oversight committee of business and community leaders to boost transparency on allocating funds—more details are expected to follow.  WHO13
  • Des Moines Public Schools asked the Iowa Auditor’s Office for an audit on Tuesday after lawmakers urged a review following the arrest of former Superintendent Ian Roberts — Interim Superintendent Matt Smith said the district will show its strong financial checks despite the extra cost, while Auditor Rob Sand confirmed his office got the request without a set timeline.  WHO13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Andrea McNeese, 33, received a life-saving perfect-match platelet donation after 13 transfusions did not work and her hospital used a gene test—helping her fight acute leukemia since her diagnosis on August 15. She now urges more people to donate as blood centers work to meet the local shortage.  WHO13
  • Des Moines boy Gabe Fholer underwent a year and a half of treatment with chemotherapy and a breakthrough drug — Blinatumomab — that lowered his aggressive leukemia enough for a successful bone marrow transplant.
