Good morning, West Des Moines. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 17th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • In a 1997 interview on May 19 in Des Moines, KISS gave a playful performance while joking with KCCI reporter Cynthia Fodor and discussing how hundreds of concerts can lead to burnout — the band wore full makeup, bedazzled costumes, and knee-high boots to create this rare moment. This exchange showed a lighter side of the group during their whirlwind tour.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wellmark Blue Cross-Blue Shield filed a lawsuit against Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen to stop a new state law on pharmacy benefit managers, saying it breaks federal rules and the US Constitution. The insurer said the legal action is needed to stop small, separate complaints after the commissioner sent guidance on Sept. 24 that could raise its plan costs by nearly $100 million a year—likely leading to higher premiums for its 800,000 customers.  KCCI
  • Des Moines School Board president Jackie Norris ended her Senate campaign on Oct 16 after a crisis over an immigration arrest for former superintendent Ian Roberts demanded her full attention—she said coordinated attacks targeted her and the board—and she will focus on a $265 million borrowing plan for public schools in November.  Radio Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday, Iowa Radiology partnered with Blank Park Zoo in Clive to scan a Tamar wallaby, a box turtle, a corn snake and two prehensile skinks to check on their health. The zoo said the scans—especially for the wallaby’s weight loss and for determining the skinks’ sex—will help guide further care.  WHO13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Three restaurants in the area serve authentic Latin American food from Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Brazil Terra Grill in West Des Moines offers tableside meat grilling — a nod to its founder’s Brazilian background — while Panka Peruvian Restaurant and Mi Patria Ecuadorian Restaurant serve dishes like lomo saltado and hornado con mote to local diners.  Des Moines Register
