Good morning, West Des Moines.
Today, the West Des Moines school board will discuss closing Walnut Creek School at a 7 p.m. workshop meeting with a proposal to shut it down at the end of the academic year—this recommendation comes after a presentation that chronic absenteeism worsened and academic performance remained unchanged—and the plan would cut positions including the principal, secretary, and teachers.
Hundreds of runners took part in the 5th annual Turkey Trails 5k/10k at Gray’s Lake Park on Sunday morning, with nearly 450 registered participants taking part in a kids dash and longer distance race—finishers received a medal and a mini pie.
Organized by Bodies Race Company from Kansas City, the event drew community members celebrating the Thanksgiving spirit.
The fifth annual Eric Cooper Memorial Bowling Tournament at Game Day Lanes honored the Des Moines umpire whose legacy has lived on since his passing in 2019 — organizers confirmed the event sold out and supported UMPS CARE.
Sam Bernabe of the Iowa Cubs led the tribute that saw record attendance — the tournament continues to grow as a lasting homage to Cooper’s contributions to baseball.
